Tasting Notes

The aroma is softly grainy with a gentle floral hop note and a hint of fresh bread from the malt. On the palate, it's malt-forward with a mild sweetness balanced by a restrained but clean bitterness — nothing sharp, nothing cloying. The body is medium and smooth, with good conditioning that keeps it lively without being aggressive. The finish is dry enough to invite another sip, with a faint herbal hop echo that lingers briefly.

About the Brewery

Andechs is a Benedictine monastery brewery located on a hill above Ammersee in Bavaria, Germany, with brewing traditions traceable to the 15th century. It operates under the Kloster Andechs monastery and is one of the most storied ecclesiastical breweries still in active production. The brewery is known for adherence to Reinheitsgebot and produces a tight, traditional lineup of lagers and bocks that draw pilgrims and beer tourists alike to the hilltop site.

Food Pairings

Roast chicken works naturally here because the malt sweetness echoes the caramelized skin without competing with it. Weisswurst with sweet mustard is a classic Bavarian pairing where the beer's softness lets the delicate pork flavor carry. A simple pretzel with butter plays off the bread-like malt character in an almost seamless way. Mild semi-soft cheeses like Butterkäse offer a creamy counterpoint to the beer's clean bitterness. Lightly seasoned grilled white fish also pairs well, as the beer's restrained hop profile won't overpower the protein.

Style Guide

Munich Helles is a pale German lager developed in the late 19th century, largely as Munich brewers' answer to the growing popularity of Bohemian Pilsner. Where Pilsner leans into hop bitterness and a drier finish, Helles tips the balance toward soft malt sweetness with hops playing a supporting, background role. ABVs typically sit in the 4.7–5.4% range, though Spezial versions run slightly stronger. The style is defined by its subtlety — clean fermentation character, gentle carbonation, and a restraint that rewards slow drinking over novelty.
