Tasting Notes
The nose leads with mild floral and herbal hops, the kind you'd expect from noble varieties — understated but clean. On the palate, there's a firm, dry bitterness that anchors a light malt base with just a touch of cracker sweetness. The body is lean and the carbonation assertive, which keeps each sip from feeling heavy. The finish is dry and moderately bitter, lingering without being aggressive.
About the Brewery
Bauhaus Brew Labs is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and opened around 2014. They've carved out a strong local identity by leaning into a German-influenced aesthetic and lager-forward lineup at a time when most American craft breweries were chasing hops and barrel programs. Their beers tend to favor balance and drinkability over novelty, and they've maintained a solid taproom presence in the Minneapolis craft scene.
Food Pairings
A well-made German Pilsener works naturally alongside roasted chicken because the dry bitterness cuts the fat without overpowering the meat. Bratwurst or other pork sausages are a classic pairing, with the herbal hop character complementing the seasoning. Lightly salted pretzels with mustard amplify the malt-bitter interplay in the beer itself. Mild cheeses like Gouda or Havarti won't fight the delicate hop profile, letting both the food and the beer stay in their lanes. Fried fish — fish and chips or a simple fish fry — gets a good counterpoint from the dry, bitter finish.
Style Guide
German Pilsener is a pale lager defined by a pronounced, dry hop bitterness derived from noble hop varieties like Hallertau or Saaz, set against a restrained, biscuity malt base. It originated in Germany as a drier, more bitter evolution of the Bohemian Pilsner style that emerged from Plzeň in the mid-1800s. Where Czech Pilsners tend to be rounder and more malt-forward with a softer water profile, the German version is leaner, crisper in bitterness, and finishes notably dry. ABV typically sits in the 4.5–5.5% range, keeping the focus on balance and hop character rather than strength.
