Tasting Notes
The aroma is malt-forward with notes of toasted bread, light caramel, and a faint earthiness. On the palate, there's a gentle sweetness from pale and crystal malts, understated hop bitterness, and a soft, round body that feels fuller than the low ABV might suggest. The finish is clean and slightly nutty, with no harsh edges. It's a well-integrated example of the style, where balance rather than intensity is the point.
About the Brewery
Belhaven is based in Dunbar, on the East Lothian coast of Scotland, and has been brewing on the same site since 1719, making it one of Scotland's oldest working breweries. The brewery is strongly associated with Scottish ale traditions, particularly the Shilling system of classification. It's widely distributed across the UK and internationally, and its 80 Shilling is considered a benchmark for the style. Greene King acquired the brewery in 2005, though brewing continues at the Dunbar site.
Food Pairings
The malt-driven sweetness pairs well with roasted chicken because the caramel notes complement the browned skin without fighting it. Steak pie or a slow-cooked beef stew works naturally given the beer's affinity for savory, rich meat flavors. A mild cheddar or aged Scottish cheddar matches the nutty, bready character without overwhelming it. Haggis is a classic regional pairing where the earthy, meaty intensity of the dish is softened by the beer's gentle sweetness and low bitterness.
Style Guide
Scottish Ales are defined by their malt-first character, with minimal hop presence and a soft, rounded body that prioritizes balance over boldness. The Shilling designation — 60, 70, 80, or 90 — originates from a 19th-century Scottish invoicing system based on the price per barrel, with 80 Shilling representing a medium-strength session ale. Compared to English bitters or pale ales, Scottish Ales lean heavier on caramel malt and lighter on hop aroma and bitterness. The style's low attenuation leaves a touch of residual sweetness that gives it a filling, almost chewy quality despite modest alcohol levels.
