Tasting Notes
The aroma leads with roasted barley, dark chocolate, and a faint earthiness with some coffee underneath. On the palate, it delivers bitter cocoa and espresso flavors with a moderate hop bitterness that keeps things from going too sweet. The body is medium-full with a smooth, slightly chewy texture. The finish is dry and roasty, lingering without being harsh.
About the Brewery
Bell's Brewery is based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, founded by Larry Bell in 1985, making it one of the oldest craft breweries in the Midwest. They're known for anchoring Michigan's craft beer scene and producing a wide, year-round lineup that includes the widely respected Two Hearted Ale and Oberon wheat ale. Bell's has maintained its independent identity and regional character across decades of industry consolidation, distributing across a significant portion of the eastern United States.
Food Pairings
Barbecue brisket pairs well here because the roasty bitterness echoes the char on the meat and cuts through fat. Oysters on the half shell work because the dry, coffee-edged finish provides contrast to their brine and creaminess. A classic cheeseburger holds up comfortably since the beer's body matches the richness without overwhelming. Dark chocolate brownies or a chocolate torte reinforce the cocoa notes already present in the beer, making the pairing feel cohesive rather than forced.
Style Guide
American Stout is a roast-forward dark ale that shares its foundation with Irish dry stouts but typically brings more assertive hop bitterness and a bolder overall character. The style is defined by prominent roasted barley or dark malt flavors — coffee, dark chocolate, sometimes a hint of char — with ABVs generally running from 5% to 7%. American craft brewers developed this variant by applying their hop-forward sensibility to the stout template, distinguishing it from English stouts, which tend to be softer and less bitter, and from imperial stouts, which run considerably heavier and stronger.
