Tasting Notes

Dark Truth pours with a dense, roasted character built on dark chocolate, espresso, and a hint of molasses — the nose is intense but not acrid. On the palate, it layers bittersweet cocoa and charred grain over a surprisingly smooth, full body, with dark fruit notes weaving through the middle. The finish is long, warming, and drying, with roast bitterness that lingers without becoming harsh. At 9.7%, the alcohol is present but well-integrated, adding weight rather than heat.

About the Brewery

Boulevard Brewing is based in Kansas City, Missouri, and has been one of the Midwest's flagship craft breweries since its founding in 1989. They're best known for their Unfiltered Wheat, which became a regional staple, but their Smokestack Series — the rotating lineup of higher-gravity, more adventurous releases — established their credibility on a national level. Dark Truth is part of that Smokestack lineup. Boulevard was acquired by Duvel Moortgat in 2013 but has largely maintained its brewing identity.

Food Pairings

Dark Truth works well alongside a well-marbled ribeye because the roast character in the beer mirrors the char on the meat. Barbecue brisket with a sweet-smoky glaze plays off the beer's molasses undertones without overwhelming them. Aged cheddar or a sharp blue cheese provides enough salt and fat to balance the roast bitterness. A slice of flourless chocolate cake or a dark chocolate brownie amplifies the cocoa notes already present in the beer and lets the fruit character open up.

Style Guide

American Stout builds on the foundation of British stouts — heavy roasted malt, dark color, full body — but typically pushes the bitterness higher and the alcohol further than its English counterparts. The style is defined by assertive roasted grain character, often resembling espresso or dark chocolate, and American hop varieties occasionally add a resinous or citrusy edge. It's distinct from imperial stout primarily in degree: American Stouts are robust but not extreme, generally ranging from roughly 6% to 10% ABV with a focus on drinkability alongside intensity.
