Tasting Notes
Solid Gold pours with a light, clean malt base that leans toward sweet grain and mild corn, with almost no hop presence on the nose. The flavor is straightforward — soft cereal grain, a faint grassy note, and a dry, neutral finish that doesn't linger. Body is light and carbonation is fairly assertive, which keeps the palate from feeling heavy. It's a deliberately restrained beer built for drinkability rather than complexity.
About the Brewery
Founders Brewing Co. is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has been operating since 1997. They built their reputation on big, assertive beers — All Day IPA, Breakfast Stout, and KBS among them — which makes Solid Gold something of an outlier in their lineup, aimed squarely at the mainstream lager market. They are one of the more prominent craft breweries in the Midwest and have a significant national distribution footprint.
Food Pairings
Solid Gold pairs naturally with ballpark-style food — a hot dog or bratwurst works because the beer's neutral grain character doesn't compete with the sausage's fat and salt. Mild fish tacos are a good match since the light body won't overwhelm delicate white fish. A simple green salad with vinaigrette finds a counterpoint in the beer's faint sweetness. Thin-crust cheese pizza also works well, with the beer's dryness cutting through the dairy without clashing with the tomato.
Style Guide
American Lager is a light-bodied, highly carbonated style brewed with adjuncts — typically corn or rice — alongside barley malt, which lightens the body and dials down the flavor intensity compared to a traditional German lager. Hops are used sparingly, mostly for balance rather than bitterness or aroma. The style dominates American mass-market brewing and descends from Central European lager traditions adapted in the late 19th century for broader commercial appeal. It sits lighter and blander than a Czech Pilsner or a Munich Helles, both of which carry more pronounced malt or hop character.
