Tasting Notes
The aroma is gently malty with a faint hint of noble hops — think fresh bread dough and a whisper of floral grass. On the palate, soft pale malt sweetness leads, balanced by a mild but present bitterness that keeps things from feeling cloying. The body is medium-light and smooth, with fine carbonation that carries the flavor cleanly. The finish is dry and fairly short, leaving a pleasant grain character without lingering sweetness.
About the Brewery
Hofbräu München is one of the world's most recognizable breweries, founded in 1589 as the royal court brewery of the Duchy of Bavaria. Based in Munich, it operates both the famous Hofbräuhaus beer hall and a large-scale production brewery that exports globally. The brewery is state-owned by the Free State of Bavaria and brews strictly within the Reinheitsgebot. Alongside the Original, its Maibock, Dunkel, and Weizen are fixtures of Bavarian brewing tradition.
Food Pairings
Soft pretzels with grain mustard are a natural match because the bread-like malt mirrors the dough and the mustard's sharpness cuts the beer's sweetness cleanly. Roast chicken works well here since the mild fat of the bird isn't overwhelmed by hops. Weisswurst with sweet mustard echoes the Bavarian setting and lets the beer's gentle malt do the talking. A mild Gouda or Butterkäse pairs nicely because the dairy fat smooths out the light bitterness without competing. Even a simple radish plate — the kind served in Munich beer halls — provides a peppery contrast that makes the malt pop.
Style Guide
Munich Helles is a pale German lager developed in the late 19th century as Bavarian breweries' answer to the booming popularity of Bohemian Pilsner. Where Pilsner leans into pronounced hop bitterness and a drier finish, Helles emphasizes soft, round malt character with restrained hopping — noble varieties like Hallertau provide aroma and balance rather than bite. The style typically falls between 4.7% and 5.4% ABV, with a clean, smooth fermentation profile that comes from cold-conditioning lager yeast. It is considered the everyday drinking lager of Munich, distinct from the stronger and more hop-forward Export style.
