Tasting Notes
The aroma is light and approachable, with faint tropical fruit and a mild grainy sweetness — nothing aggressive, nothing hidden. About the Brewery
Kona Brewing Company was founded in 1994 on the Big Island of Hawaii and built its reputation on accessible, island-themed beers marketed toward the laid-back beach lifestyle. The brand is now owned by Craft Brew Alliance (absorbed into Anheuser-Busch InBev's network), and much of its volume is brewed on the mainland rather than in Hawaii — a point of ongoing criticism from craft beer purists. Big Wave is their flagship and by far their highest-volume product.
Food Pairings
Grilled mahi-mahi pairs well because the beer's light malt profile won't overwhelm delicate white fish. Fish tacos with a citrus slaw work for a similar reason, with the mild hop character cutting through the richness of fried batter. A simple green salad with a lemon vinaigrette echoes the beer's faint citrus notes without competing. Lightly salted popcorn or pretzels work because the beer's subtle sweetness plays well against plain salt. Mild soft cheeses like fresh mozzarella find a comfortable match in the beer's understated malt base.

American Blonde Ale is a straightforward, low-bitterness style built around pale malt with restrained hop character — fruity or floral rather than resinous or aggressive. It sits lighter in body and lower in bitterness than a standard American Pale Ale, and lacks the wheaty softness of a wheat beer, making it one of the more neutral craft styles available. The style gained ground in the U.S. as a gateway option for drinkers moving away from mass-market lagers, offering just enough craft character to be interesting without demanding much of the drinker.
