Tasting Notes
The aroma hits with a dense wave of tropical fruit — mango, papaya, and fresh-cut pineapple — layered over dank, resinous pine. On the palate, the hop character is intensely juicy rather than sharply bitter, with a full, almost oily body that coats the mouth. The high ABV is remarkably well-integrated, adding a soft warmth without announcing itself. The finish lingers with a pleasant bitterness and a faint sweetness that keeps you coming back.
About the Brewery
Other Half Brewing is based in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 2014. They built their reputation almost entirely on hop-forward beers — IPAs, DIPAs, and hazy variants — and became one of the most sought-after names in the Northeast's can-release culture. Their weekly releases routinely draw lines, and collaborations with other respected craft breweries are a consistent part of their output. They've since expanded with additional locations in New York.
Food Pairings
The beer's tropical fruit intensity and resinous bitterness pair well with spicy Thai curry, where the hop oils help temper the heat while echoing the dish's lemongrass and mango notes. Aged cheddar works because its sharpness and fat cut through the beer's dense body. Jerk chicken is a strong match — the char and allspice amplify the dank, fruity hop character. A rich, fatty cheeseburger benefits from the carbonation and bitterness acting as a palate reset between bites.
Style Guide
American Double or Imperial IPAs take the hop-forward character of a standard American IPA and push the malt bill and dry-hop additions significantly higher, typically landing between 7.5% and 10%+ ABV — this one sits at the upper end of that range. The style originated in American craft brewing in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with Russian River's Pliny the Elder often cited as a benchmark. Unlike a standard IPA, the doubled malt backbone is necessary to support the amplified hop load, which can read as dank, tropical, piney, or citrusy depending on the hop selection.
