Tasting Notes
Backseat Berner is a Vermont IPA that leans into the hazy, hop-forward character common to New England-influenced American IPAs. Expect a pronounced aroma of tropical fruit — mango, citrus peel, maybe a touch of pine — with a soft, full body underneath. The bitterness is moderate and rounded rather than sharp, letting the hop flavor do the talking. The finish is fairly clean with just enough malt backbone to keep things balanced.
About the Brewery
Otter Creek is based in Middlebury, Vermont, and has been operating since the early 1990s, making it one of the longer-standing craft breweries in the state. They're known for a broad, approachable lineup that spans lagers, ales, and IPAs, with a reputation for reliable, well-made beer without heavy trend-chasing. They share ownership with Wolaver's organic beers under the same Vermont umbrella.
Food Pairings
The tropical hop character here pairs naturally with spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes, where the fruit notes soften the heat without disappearing into it. A classic cheeseburger with sharp cheddar works well because the malt backbone handles the fat while the hops cut through it. Grilled chicken with a citrus marinade echoes the beer's own citrus notes in a complementary way. Fish tacos with a lime crema are another solid match — the acidity of the garnish and the hop bitterness reinforce each other cleanly.
Style Guide
American IPA is a hop-forward ale defined by pronounced bitterness and bold hop aroma, typically ranging from around 6% to 7.5% ABV. It originated as an American interpretation of the British IPA tradition, but diverged significantly by leaning on domestic and later New World hops that deliver citrus, pine, and tropical fruit rather than the earthy, floral tones of English varieties. Compared to a West Coast IPA, many modern American IPAs soften the bitterness and increase hop aroma through dry hopping, edging toward the New England style without fully committing to haze or juiciness.
