Tasting Notes
Cougar pours out with a gentle grain-forward aroma, light hints of floral hops, and a touch of honey sweetness. On the palate it's clean and malt-focused with low bitterness — the hops provide mild herbal or grassy character rather than any real punch. The body is light to medium, keeping things approachable without feeling thin. The finish is short and dry, leaving little residue and inviting the next sip.
About the Brewery
Rhinegeist is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, operating out of a renovated 1895 bottling plant in the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood — the name itself roughly translates to 'ghost of the Rhine.' Founded in 2013, the brewery grew quickly into one of the Midwest's more prominent craft producers, known largely for its flagship Truth IPA. Their lineup spans a wide range of styles, and they've built a strong local identity tied closely to Cincinnati's German-brewing heritage and urban revitalization.
Food Pairings
A lighter blonde ale like this works well alongside grilled chicken because the malt sweetness echoes the char without competing with the protein. Fish tacos are a natural fit since the low bitterness won't overwhelm delicate white fish. A simple Caesar salad pairs cleanly because the beer's dry finish cuts through the creamy dressing. Mild cheeses like Havarti or Muenster complement the gentle grain character without either element overpowering the other.
Style Guide
American Blonde Ale is a broadly accessible style built around balance — clean malt sweetness, restrained hop bitterness, and a light to medium body. ABVs typically land in the 4–5% range, keeping it sessionable. It emerged from American craft brewing as a more approachable alternative to pale ales and lagers, borrowing the clean fermentation profile of the latter while retaining the malt-forward warmth of the former. Compared to an American Pale Ale, a blonde carries noticeably less hop presence and bitterness, making the malt the primary driver.
