Tasting Notes
Alexandr pours true to the Czech pilsner tradition with a soft, doughy malt aroma layered with fresh hay and a gentle floral hop note from Saaz. On the palate, the malt is rounded and slightly bready without being heavy, and the bitterness is assertive but smooth — herbal and spicy rather than sharp. The body is medium-light with a fine, persistent carbonation. The finish is dry and clean, lingering just long enough on the hop character.
About the Brewery
Schilling Beer Co. is based in Littleton, New Hampshire, founded in 2013. They've built a strong regional reputation by focusing seriously on Central European lager traditions at a time when most American craft breweries were chasing hop-forward ales, and their Czech and German-style lagers are consistently among the most technically accomplished in New England. They operate out of a converted mill building along the Ammonoosuc River.
Food Pairings
Roast chicken works well here because the malt softness mirrors the savory skin without competing with it. A classic Czech svíčková — beef sirloin in cream sauce — pairs naturally given the beer's origin style and its ability to cut mild richness. Fried fish or fish and chips benefit from the dry, herbal finish acting as a palate reset between bites. Mild washed-rind cheeses like Muenster complement the bready malt without overwhelming the delicate hop character.
Style Guide
Czech pilsner is a pale lager originating in Bohemia, most famously associated with the city of Plzeň and first brewed there in 1842. It's distinguished from German pilsners by its softer water profile, which produces a rounder, slightly fuller malt body and a less aggressively bitter finish. Saaz hops define the style's aroma — herbal, earthy, faintly spicy — and the overall effect is balanced rather than hop-dominant. ABV typically runs in the 4.5–5.5% range, and the style rewards slow, cold lagering to achieve its characteristic smoothness.
