Tasting Notes
Basement IPA leads with resinous pine and citrus peel on the nose, with hints of tropical fruit underneath. On the palate, bitterness is assertive but not aggressive, balanced by a moderate malt backbone that keeps things grounded. The body is medium-light, and the finish is dry and lingering with a clean hop bite. It drinks like a straightforward West Coast-leaning American IPA without a lot of bells and whistles.
About the Brewery
Scofflaw Brewing is based in Atlanta, Georgia, founded in 2016. They built their reputation largely on hop-forward beers, with their Basement IPA becoming one of their flagship offerings and a staple in the Georgia craft beer market. They operate out of a production facility in the Westside neighborhood and have grown into one of the more prominent independent craft breweries in the Southeast, with broad distribution across the region.
Food Pairings
Grilled burgers work well here because the resinous bitterness cuts through fat without fighting the char. Fish tacos are a solid match since the citrus hop character mirrors lime and bright toppings. Spicy Thai or Indian dishes benefit from the malt backbone, which tempers heat without dulling the flavors. A sharp cheddar or aged gouda also plays nicely against the pine and citrus notes, letting both the beer and cheese show more complexity than either would alone.
Style Guide
The American IPA took the English IPA template and pushed the hops much harder, emphasizing domestic and later Southern Hemisphere varieties that deliver citrus, pine, resin, and tropical fruit over the earthy, floral character of British hops. ABVs typically land between 6% and 7.5%, with firm bitterness and a drier finish than many malt-forward styles. It sits between the lighter, more restrained English IPA and the hazy New England IPA, which softens bitterness and emphasizes juicy, unfiltered texture. The American IPA is arguably the style that defined the modern craft beer movement in the United States.
