Tasting Notes
The aroma leads with toasted malt, a hint of dark caramel, and mild nuttiness — nothing sharp or aggressive. On the palate, flavors of toffee, roasted grain, and a touch of dark chocolate come through with moderate hop bitterness that keeps it from going soft. The body is medium and the mouthfeel has some weight to it. The finish is dry and slightly roasty, lingering without becoming heavy.
About the Brewery
Smuttynose is based in Hampton, New Hampshire and has been a fixture in New England craft brewing since the mid-1990s. They built their reputation on consistent, unfussy beers that favor drinkability and flavor balance over trend-chasing. Old Brown Dog is one of their flagship offerings and has remained largely unchanged over the years, which says something about how well the recipe holds up. Their lineup runs from session-weight lagers to bigger specialty releases, but the core brands are what most people know them for.
Food Pairings
A burger with sharp cheddar works well here because the malt sweetness echoes the caramelized meat while the hop bitterness cuts through the fat. Braised short ribs or a beef stew pair naturally with the roasty, caramel backbone of the beer. Aged gouda brings out the nutty, toffee notes in the malt. A pecan brownie or chocolate-dipped pretzel can lean into the dark chocolate and toasted grain character without overwhelming it.
Style Guide
American brown ale is a malt-forward style built around caramel, toasted grain, chocolate, and nut flavors, with hop bitterness playing a supporting role rather than dominating. It draws loosely from British brown ale traditions but tends to be drier, less sweet, and hops are more present — especially in earlier American craft interpretations. ABVs typically run from about 4.5% to 7%, making this example sit comfortably on the fuller end of the range. It differs from a porter in that roast character is more background than foreground, and it lacks the dark, almost coffee-like edge that defines that style.
