Tasting Notes
The aroma leads with roasted malt, dark chocolate, and a faint hint of coffee, with just enough sweetness to keep it approachable. On the palate, flavors of bittersweet cocoa and toasted bread sit alongside a mild, rounded bitterness that never turns harsh. The body is medium and smooth — notably lighter in feel than the dark color suggests. The finish is clean and moderately dry, with a lingering roast character that fades gently.
About the Brewery
Sprecher Brewing is based in Glendale, Wisconsin, founded in 1985 by Randal Sprecher, making it one of the earlier craft breweries in the Midwest. The brewery built its reputation partly on German-style lagers and its widely distributed craft sodas, which remain a significant part of the business. Black Bavarian is arguably their flagship and most recognized beer, having won multiple awards over the years and maintaining a loyal following well beyond Wisconsin.
Food Pairings
Bratwurst or grilled sausages are a natural match, as the roasted malt complements savory, fatty pork without competing with it. A sharp cheddar or aged gouda works well because the beer's mild bitterness cuts through the richness of the cheese. Beef tacos or a smash burger pair nicely since the toasted malt echoes the char on grilled meat. Dark chocolate desserts — a brownie or chocolate mousse — echo the cocoa notes in the beer and keep the finish from turning bitter.
Style Guide
Schwarzbier, German for "black beer," is a dark lager originating in Thuringia and Saxony in central Germany, with roots going back centuries. Despite its nearly opaque appearance, it is characterized by a restrained roast flavor and a light-to-medium body — it is not a stout, and the comparison to one tends to mislead drinkers expecting heaviness. Bitterness is low to moderate, fermentation is clean and lager-crisp, and ABV typically runs between 4.5 and 5.5 percent, placing this example slightly toward the stronger end of the range.
