Tasting Notes

The aroma leads with toasted malt, light caramel, and a faint hint of bread crust. On the palate, it delivers a clean malt-forward profile with notes of toffee and lightly roasted grain, balanced by a restrained Noble hop bitterness that keeps sweetness in check. The body is medium, smooth, and well-rounded without feeling heavy. The finish is moderately dry with a pleasant lingering malt character.

About the Brewery

Sprecher Brewing is based in Glendale, Wisconsin, just outside Milwaukee, and was founded in 1985 by Randal Sprecher, a former Pabst brewmaster. The brewery helped anchor Milwaukee's craft brewing revival and is known for balancing traditional German lager techniques with American craft sensibilities. Sprecher also built a strong reputation for its fire-brewed craft sodas, which now share shelf space alongside its beer lineup. Their beers tend to emphasize malt-driven German styles done with care and consistency.

Food Pairings

Bratwurst or grilled pork sausages are a natural match because the toasted malt echoes the caramelized casing without overpowering the meat. Roasted chicken works well since the beer's dry finish cuts through the fat while the malt mirrors the browned skin. A sharp cheddar or Gruyère brings out the toffee notes in the beer through complementary richness. Soft pretzels with whole-grain mustard lean into the Bavarian roots of the style and make the bread-crust malt character more prominent.

Style Guide

Vienna lager is a malt-driven amber lager developed in Vienna, Austria, in the mid-19th century, most closely associated with brewer Anton Dreher. It's defined by its use of Vienna malt, which produces a toasty, biscuity character with moderate caramel sweetness and a clean, dry finish. Hop presence is restrained — enough for balance but never the focus. It sits between the lighter Munich Helles and the darker Munich Dunkel, sharing some toasted character with both but occupying its own distinct, amber-hued lane.
