Tasting Notes

The aroma leads with roasted malt, dark chocolate, and a distinct wood-smoke character that's assertive without being acrid. On the palate, flavors of espresso, cocoa, and a subtle sweetness from caramel malt balance against the smoke, which lingers into a dry, clean finish. The body is medium-full — substantial enough to feel substantial, but not syrupy. It's a well-integrated porter where the smoke reads as seasoning rather than the whole show.

About the Brewery

Stone Brewing is based in Escondido, California, founded in 1996, and was one of the defining voices of the West Coast craft beer movement. They built their reputation on bold, aggressively hopped IPAs and uncompromising takes on darker styles, along with a famously irreverent brand voice. Their Arrogant Bastard Ale and Stone IPA remain flagship reference points for the era. They operate one of the larger independent craft brewing operations in the country.

Food Pairings

Smoked meats like brisket or pulled pork echo the beer's own smoke character without competing against it. Aged cheddar or gouda provides a salty, fatty contrast that softens the roast. A classic burger with caramelized onions plays well against the dark malt backbone. Dark chocolate desserts — a brownie, a ganache tart — mirror the cocoa notes in the beer without overwhelming them.

Style Guide

American Porter is a dark ale built around roasted barley and dark malt, delivering flavors of chocolate, coffee, and sometimes caramel, with a medium body and moderate bitterness. It traces its lineage to English porter but American craft brewers pushed the roast character harder and, in cases like this one, added adjuncts like smoked malt to differentiate their versions. It sits between a robust stout and a brown ale in terms of intensity — darker and more bitter than a brown, but typically lighter-bodied and less aggressively roasted than a stout. ABV generally runs between 4.5% and 6.5%.
