Tasting Notes

Focal Banger pours with a haze that signals its New England lean, and the aroma is dominated by tropical and citrus hop character — think mango, tangerine, and a hint of pine. On the palate, hop flavor is front and center but bitterness stays measured, kept in check by a soft, full body and a touch of residual sweetness from the malt base. The finish is relatively clean for how hop-forward the beer is, without the harsh, resinous bite you'd get from a West Coast IPA. It's a technically precise beer that made this style of juicy, hazy IPA widely recognized.

About the Brewery

The Alchemist is based in Stowe, Vermont, and is one of the most influential small breweries in American craft beer. Founded by John and Jen Kimmich, the brewery became famous for Heady Topper, a double IPA that repeatedly topped national rankings and created serious demand for Vermont beer tourism. Focal Banger followed as their session-weight companion to Heady Topper, and both beers helped define what the New England IPA style would become. The brewery operates a small footprint by design, keeping distribution tight and local.

Food Pairings

The tropical hop character here works well with spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes, where the fruit-forward bitterness cuts through chile heat without clashing. A classic cheeseburger pairs naturally because the malt body holds up to fat and char. Fish tacos with mango salsa echo the citrus and tropical notes already present in the beer. Aged cheddar or a mild washed-rind cheese offers enough funk to contrast the hops without overwhelming them. Grilled shrimp with citrus marinade mirrors the beer's flavor profile and keeps things light without dulling what's in the glass.

Style Guide

American IPA is defined by assertive hop character — bitterness, aroma, and flavor derived primarily from American hop varieties known for citrus, pine, and tropical fruit notes — set against a relatively neutral or lightly sweet malt backbone. The style emerged from the West Coast in the 1980s and 1990s, building on English IPA traditions but pushing hops much harder. Focal Banger sits at the juicier, hazier end of the American IPA spectrum, sometimes categorized separately as a New England IPA, which prioritizes hop aroma and softness over the sharper bitterness of a classic West Coast example. ABV typically runs from 6% to 7.5%, and this beer lands squarely in that range.
