Tasting Notes

The aroma leads with fresh, herbal, and floral hop character — classic Saaz — layered over a clean, lightly sweet malt base. On the palate, the bitterness is firm and sustained without being harsh, backed by a lean, crackery malt body that keeps things focused. The finish is dry and long, with that signature Saaz spice lingering. It's a well-attenuated lager that rewards slow drinking.

About the Brewery

Victory Brewing Company is based in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, founded in 1996 by Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet, two childhood friends who trained in Germany before launching their own operation. They built their reputation on technically precise, European-influenced beers at a time when most American craft breweries were chasing hop-forward ales. Their lineup spans German lagers, Belgian-inspired ales, and American IPAs, with HopDevil and Prima Pils among their most enduring and recognized beers nationally.

Food Pairings

Grilled bratwurst or weisswurst is a natural match because the beer's herbal bitterness cuts through pork fat cleanly. A simple roast chicken lets the malt's gentle sweetness come forward without competition. Soft pretzels with grainy mustard echo the bread-like malt character in the beer. Mild washed-rind cheeses like Muenster work because their slight funk plays against the dry, bitter finish rather than overwhelming it.

Style Guide

German Pilsener — distinct from its Czech cousin — is defined by a drier body, more pronounced and assertive hop bitterness, and a cleaner, more neutral malt profile. It developed in northern Germany, particularly around Hamburg and Berlin, as a leaner evolution of the Bohemian original. Where Czech Pilsner tends toward a rounder, softer finish and more visible malt sweetness, the German version emphasizes attenuation and herbal hop dryness. ABV typically runs between 4.5% and 5.5%, keeping the focus on drinkability and technical precision rather than strength.
