Tasting Notes
The aroma is light and grainy with faint floral and herbal hop notes. On the palate, it delivers mild bitterness, a touch of corn sweetness, and a clean malt backbone that stays restrained throughout. The body is light to medium with moderate carbonation. The finish is dry and short, leaving little residue — functional rather than complex.
About the Brewery
Birra Peroni was founded in 1846 in Vigevano, Italy, later relocating its main operations to Rome. It is one of Italy's most recognized beer brands internationally and the flagship of the country's mainstream lager market. The brewery was acquired by SABMiller and is now under Asahi Group Holdings. Nastro Azzurro, launched in 1963, remains its premium export product and is widely associated with Italian lifestyle marketing.
Food Pairings
Lighter Italian dishes are natural partners here — think margherita pizza, where the beer's mild bitterness cuts through the cheese without competing with the sauce. Grilled seafood works well because the dry finish doesn't overwhelm delicate flavors. A simple arugula salad with lemon dressing matches the beer's lean, herbal character. Prosciutto and melon plays to the subtle sweetness in the malt. Fried calamari benefits from the carbonation acting as a palate cleanser between bites.
Style Guide
European pale lager is defined by its restrained malt character, low to moderate hop bitterness, and clean fermentation profile — the result of cold-conditioning with bottom-fermenting yeast strains. The style originated in Central Europe in the mid-19th century and was quickly adopted across the continent as industrial brewing scaled up. It differs from a German Pilsner in having less assertive hop presence, and from an American adjunct lager in typically using fewer starchy grains. ABV generally runs between 4.5% and 5.5%.
