Tasting Notes
The aroma is mild and grainy with faint hints of corn and light floral hops. On the palate, flavors lean toward sweet grain and a touch of biscuit malt, with minimal hop bitterness and a clean, neutral finish. The body is light and highly carbonated, which keeps it from feeling heavy. It's a beer built for drinkability over complexity, and it delivers exactly what the style promises without much deviation.
About the Brewery
Grupo Modelo is a Mexican brewing conglomerate founded in 1925 and headquartered in Mexico City. It operates several major breweries across Mexico and is behind some of the most widely distributed Mexican lager brands in the world. Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired full control of the company in 2013, though domestic U.S. distribution rights are held by Constellation Brands following an antitrust agreement. Modelo Especial has become one of the top-selling beers in the United States.
Food Pairings
This beer pairs naturally with street tacos because the neutral grain profile doesn't compete with seasoned meats and salsa. Spicy foods like chicken wings or jalapeño-heavy dishes benefit from the light, clean character, which tempers heat without adding conflicting flavors. Ceviche works well here too, as the mild malt lets bright citrus and seafood flavors stay front and center. Even a simple plate of chips and guacamole is a good match, since the beer's low bitterness won't clash with the fat of the avocado.
Style Guide
American Adjunct Lager is defined by the use of non-malt adjuncts — most commonly corn or rice — alongside barley malt, which lightens the body, reduces production cost, and produces a highly neutral flavor profile. The style sits at the lower end of the ABV spectrum, generally between 4% and 5%, and features minimal hop presence and very low bitterness. It grew to dominance in the 20th century through large American industrial breweries and shares DNA with International Pale Lager, though it typically has an even lighter malt character than its European counterparts.
