Tasting Notes

The aroma is gently grainy with a soft floral and herbal hop presence — subtle but clean. On the palate, light bready malt sits alongside a restrained bitterness that keeps things balanced rather than leaning hard in either direction. The body is light to medium, with a dry, slightly minerally finish that invites another sip. It drinks closer to the lager end of the spectrum despite technically being an ale.

About the Brewery

Saint Arnold is Houston's oldest craft brewery, founded in 1994 by Brock Wagner and Kevin Bartol. They built a strong regional following in Texas with a year-round lineup that spans approachable everyday drinkers alongside more ambitious seasonal and barrel-aged releases. Their facility in Houston has become a genuine destination, and they're widely credited with helping establish Houston as a serious craft beer city.

Food Pairings

Grilled Gulf shrimp works well here because the beer's light malt softness doesn't overpower delicate seafood. A classic chicken schnitzel echoes the style's German roots while the dry finish cuts through fried breading. Mild soft pretzels with mustard pair naturally given the beer's Cologne-born heritage. A simple green salad with a lemon vinaigrette finds an easy partner in the beer's herbal hop note.

Style Guide

Kölsch is a pale, top-fermented ale brewed exclusively in Cologne, Germany under a protected geographic designation — though American craft breweries produce their own interpretations freely. It ferments warm like an ale but is then cold-conditioned like a lager, which gives it an unusually clean, neutral character for an ale. ABV typically falls between 4.4% and 5.2%, and the flavor profile sits in a narrow lane: light grain, soft floral hops, low bitterness, dry finish. It's often contrasted with Altbier, another German ale style that runs darker and more bitter.
