Tasting Notes
Master Shredder pours hazy and dense, leading with a ripe tropical aroma — mango, papaya, and a thread of citrus pith layered over a soft dankness. On the palate it's full and pillowy, with stone fruit and melon flavors up front and a restrained bitterness that barely interrupts before the finish. At 8% it carries noticeable warmth without the alcohol feeling aggressive. The finish is soft and slightly juicy, with just enough bitterness to keep it from feeling syrupy.
About the Brewery
The Veil Brewing Co. is based in Richmond, Virginia, and has been one of the most closely watched NEIPA-focused breweries on the East Coast since opening in 2016. They built their reputation on heavily hopped, hazy beers released in small batches that regularly generate significant regional demand. Beyond IPAs, they've explored pastry stouts and sour ales, but their hop-forward releases remain the core of their identity and what draws enthusiasts to their taproom.
Food Pairings
The beer's tropical fruit weight and soft bitterness work well with spicy Thai curry, where the sweetness of the hops cushions the heat. Grilled shrimp tacos with mango salsa echo the beer's fruit character without competing with it. A rich, creamy brie or triple-cream cheese plays against the carbonation and cuts through the body. Jerk chicken is another strong match, where the beer's fruit notes complement the allspice and scotch bonnet char without being overwhelmed.
Style Guide
New England IPA — sometimes called hazy IPA — is defined by its deliberately cloudy appearance, low perceived bitterness, and forward fruit character driven almost entirely by late-addition and dry hops. The style emerged from Vermont and New England craft breweries in the early 2010s and spread rapidly, distinguished from West Coast IPA by its softer water profile, higher protein grain bill, and emphasis on juicy hop flavor over resinous bitterness. ABVs typically range from 6% to 9%, and the body tends toward full and round rather than lean.
